 THE PROJECT

THE PROJECT

Similar to the Eagle Scout Project, the Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. This project can be completed by only Girl Scouts in high school, and it challenges girls to tackle a problem in their community, changing the world for the better. The project consists of at least 80 hours of work, and gold award recipients must use their leadership and organizational skills to transform their project into action.

Through my Gold Award Project, I hope to help fight violence against women and make these girls feel more safe and confident. Just like many other girls growing up, I have been told many cautionary tales about women getting assaulted and that I should never walk the streets alone. However, learning how to defend myself has helped me gain confidence and makes me feel much safer. My goal is to empower others to stand up for themselves and become more confident when handling difficult situations. My objective is to motivate other girls to learn how to defend themselves, and I want to inspire them to become more confident in themselves and their abilities.

With this project, I hope to host self-defense workshops and teach participants how to prevent becoming a victim of assault, and to give the girls a fighting chance.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

69%

OF RAPE VICTIMS ARE 12-34 YEARS-OLD WOMEN

35%

OF WOMEN ARE VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT WORLDWIDE

25%

OF COLLEGE WOMEN ARE ASSAULTED IN THE UNITED STATES

In our community, many girls feel unsafe. Whether it be walking around on the streets, hanging out with friends, or even going to school, young women have been warned to always be cautious and observant in case of assault. Girls from ages 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be a victim of sexual assault in the United States, and up to 50 percent of sexual assaults worldwide are committed against girls under 16. In order to address this problem, I hope to use this project to impact my community, and to help prevent these dangerous situations.

My Gold Award Project, Fight Like A Girl, includes self-defense workshops where I will be teaching the participants basic self-defense moves. These sessions last only one and a half hours long, and they are open to all girls ranging from 10 years old to 18 years old. In addition, I will provide self-defense tutorials so you can practice at home with your family and friends.
